Transportation

Getting there:

If you are flying in, there are lots of airports to choose from. The closest airport to Lake Placid (where many of you will want to stay -- see Where to Stay, at right) is Adirondack Regional Airport (airport code = SLK), in Saranac, which is serviced by Continental Airlines and is 16 miles outside the town of Lake Placid. There are also two major airports in the relative vicinity: Albany (2 hours away), and Montreal (2.5 hours). Each has car rentals on site, if that's of interest. You can also drive up from NYC, which takes about 5 hours. For driving directions to Lake Placid from each of these airports, or from NYC, please follow this link.

Getting around:

There will be shuttle buses between the hotels in Lake Placid and Kate's house the day of the wedding.

Shuttle bus schedule:

A shuttle bus to Kate's house will leave from the parking lot of the High Peaks Resort (which is right on the main strip in Lake Placid, see map here -- i.e. you can walk here easily from other hotels in Lake Placid) at 4pm sharp on Saturday. There will also be shuttle buses to bring people back to Lake Placid at the end of the wedding.

Where to Stay

Hotels:

We suspect most of you will want to stay in Lake Placid, which is 30-45 minutes from Tupper Lake by car, depending on whether Kate's driving (you should budget for 45 minutes). We have reserved blocs of rooms at the High Peaks Resort and Interlaken Inn. We also recommend the Mirror Lake Inn, the Northwoods Inn for a lower-priced option, and The Haus if you're traveling with a large group.

IMPORTANT: Please note that the hotels will only hold these room blocs through March 31. So book early.

Camping:

If you are feeling heroic and want to camp, that's an option as well, and we can tell you where best to do it. But it might be a good idea to get a cheap motel room in Tupper Lake where you can take a shower and get dressed before the wedding. Some options:

What to Do

Here are some local establishments and activities that we firmly recommend.

Activities:

Helms Aero Service, Long Lake - (15 minute sea-plane rides for $20 -- here's a YouTube video of what this is like. Long Lake is one town over from Tupper Lake.)

High Falls Gorge, Lake Placid area - ("You should put this first, not Helms Aero Service." - Kate) Also, there was disagreement between Kate and Nell Ryder over whether High Falls Gorge is "a place where you jump off waterfalls" or "a hike." Seems like it might be both, but please go and let us know.

The Olympic Center, Lake Placid (a good place to go summer bobsledding!)

Hiking:

A few favorites: Coney Mountain in Tupper Lake, right by Shelter Cove; Panther Mountain, between Tupper and Saranac; Mount Marcy, outside Lake Placid. (All of these are relatively short hikes; Mount Marcy, of the three, is the longest.)
